A month or so ago, I was talking to an acquaintance about the mobile auto detailing sector, and they asked me which areas of the business were the most profitable. Well, having been in the industry previously, I can say that detailing private corporate jet aircraft was always quite lucrative, but it takes quite a while to build trust to build the customer base and clientele. Also the marine sector was quite good, but let me explain some of the issues you have to deal with in running a boat cleaning and detailing business.
Perhaps, you want to augment your current mobile auto detailing business, good, that makes sense, but remember there are a lot more cars than boats, and there are a lot more boats than aircraft. So, in many regards you might be better just sticking with automobiles and doing a little bit more marketing. Okay so, I realize that didn't scare you away, so, let's talk about some of the boat cleaning topics which you might not have considered.
First, as I said it takes a while to build up your customer base down at the marina. Once you do, that book of business is actually worth quite a bit, thus, when you go to sell your boat cleaning business, yes sell it, you should be able to recoup at least some of the time it took in building it. No, probably not all the hours involved, but a significant portion. That is if you can develop a good reputation and get a steady list of good paying customers.
In many areas there are Seasonality Issues with boat cleaning companies, thus it makes sense to have a fall-back coming fall, as in perhaps winterization services, and maintaining your auto-detailing customers too. And with boat detailing don't forget about the Training of Employees and any Independent Contractors that you might have. If you plan on doing both autos and boats, realize there will be Scheduling Challenges to deal with as well.
Boat washing, cleaning, and detailing can be a very rewarding business, but it is hard work, and there is a right way and wrong way to do it. If you don't have the time to build up that market segment in your current business, you might wish to reconsider and forgo that potential expansion area for your company.
If you decide to go for it, maybe you might want to find someone who is getting out of the business and take over their clientele or book of customers.
